What is Flip 7?

Flip 7 (buy it?) is a Blackjack-like card game. The deck consists of one 0, one 1, two 2's, three 3's and so on up to twelve 12's, and also some other kinds of cards I'll mention later. A player's score is (in most cases) the sum of the cards in their hand, but if they draw a pair (the same number card twice), then they've "busted" and their score for the round is 0. So it's a luck-based/risk-management/card-counting game about knowing when to stop. Like Blackjack.

How to play Flip 7

A dealer (who is also in play) shuffles the deck and all players take turns clockwise. On a player's turn, they may choose to hit (take a card) or stay (take no card and be out* for the round). All dealing is public. If somebody winds up with two of the same number card, they bust, so they're out* for the round and their score for the round is 0.

* A player who is "out" cannot take cards for the duration of a round. Note however that being "out" is not necessarily "busting," the difference being that only busting sets one's score for the round to 0.

This continues until either everyone is out or someone accumulates 7 number cards, a feat for which they earn 15 bonus points automatically. If either event happens, the round ends, everyone discards their hand, and the whole thing happens from the beginning. Rounds proceed until someone's cumulative score has broken some winning threshold, traditionally 200 (but mutable for shorter/longer games.)

The deck

The deck consists of 94 cards: 79 number cards, 6 bonus cards, and 9 action cards.

Number cards constitute the majority of the deck. If a player draws two of the same number card, they bust. If a player accumulates 7 number cards, they earn 15 points and the round ends. Each number card contributes its number to a player's score, e.g. 4 is worth 4 points.

Bonus cards contribute to a score but do not conflict with other cards. If a player has a 4 card and draws a +4 card, they do not bust, and they have 4 + 4 = 8 points total.

The total formula for scoring is n × m + b, where n is the sum of all number cards, m is 2 if the ×2 card is held and 1 otherwise, and b is the sum of all bonus cards (except ×2). That is all to say that for bonus cards, multiplication takes place before addition.

Action cards do not directly modify a player's score but instead cause some action to take place.

A second chance card, when dealt, is kept in a player's hand. Whenever that player is dealt a pair and would normally be forced to bust, they instead discard the offending card and the second chance card but remain in the game. A player can only ever have one second chance card; if they receive more than one, they must give it to another player who is in and does not have one. If there are no such players, the surplus second chance card is discarded.

When a player is dealt a freeze card, they immediately choose any player who is in, including themself. The chosen player is forced to stay immediately. The freeze card is discarded.

When a player is dealt a flip 3 card, they immediately choose any player who is in, including themself. The chosen player is forced to draw 3 cards immediately (or fewer if the chosen player busts or accumulates 7 number cards, in which case the round ends.) The flip 3 card is discarded.

If the player targeted by a flip 3 card is dealt any action cards, these are only to be resolved after all 3 cards are dealt or the player busts. (If the player busts, they may still use freeze or flip 3 cards.)

End of game

When a round ends, if any player's score is higher than the winning threshold, the game is over. The winner is the player with the highest score (not necessarily the first or only player to break the winning threshold.) If multiple players are tied for the highest score, all of them have won. 🌼

A terminal in the game will instruct the rest. Your friends do not need to be on the site to play; just have them tune in and routinely ask them if they want to hit or stay. Enjoy!
